Welcome to Apache Friends!
Apache Friends is a non-profit project to promote the Apache web server. It was founded in the spring of 2002 by http://www.apachefriends.org/img/link.gif Kai 'Oswald' Seidler and Kay Vogelgesang. The following activities are our contribution towards promoting the web server and related technologies:
1.    Easy to use software (see our Apache distribution XAMPP below).
2.    Easy to read documentation (Sorry, all texts apart from the FAQ are only available in German, our http://www.apachefriends.org/img/link.gif »Apache für Dummies« book for example).
3.    The creation of an online community for helping each other out should any questions or problems arise (see our http://www.apachefriends.org/img/link.gif Forums or http://www.apachefriends.org/img/link.gif Chats for further resources).
If you want to know more about Apache Friends please take a look at our http://www.apachefriends.org/img/link.gif Apache Friends FAQ page.
Our most important project
http://www.apachefriends.org/images/211.jpgMany people know from their own experience that it's not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start.
At the moment there are four XAMPP versions:
  • a version for Linux systems (tested for Ubuntu, SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian),
  • a version for Windows 2000, 2003, XP and Vista,
  • a beta version for Solaris SPARC (developed and tested under Solaris 8),
  • and a beta version for Mac OS X.
These Mac OS X and Solaris versions of XAMPP are still in the first steps of development. Use at you own risk!

The distribution for Linux systems (tested for SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian) contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, gdbm, zlib, expat, Sablotron, libxml, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class, ncurses, mod_perl, FreeTDS, gettext, mcrypt, mhash, eAccelerator, SQLite and IMAP C-Client.
The distribution for Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. This version contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP + PEAR, Perl, mod_php, mod_perl, mod_ssl, OpenSSL, phpMyAdmin, Webalizer, Mercury Mail Transport System for Win32 and NetWare Systems v3.32, Ming, FileZilla FTP Server, mcrypt, eAccelerator, SQLite, and WEB-DAV + mod_auth_mysql.
The distribution for Mac OS X contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, SQLite, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, GD, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, zlib, Ming, Webalizer, mod_perl.
The distribution for Solaris (developed and tested with Solaris 8, tested with Solaris 9) contains: Apache, MySQL, PHP & PEAR, Perl, ProFTPD, phpMyAdmin, OpenSSL, Freetype2, libjpeg, libpng, zlib, expat, Ming, Webalizer, pdf class.
* XAMPP is free of charge
We don't like overpriced commercial software and XAMPP is our attempt to do something that shows free software doesn't have to be bad.

XAMPP installs easily under Linux: Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl optimally put together. (Linux screenshot of PHP/Ming demo)
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/img/blank.gif
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/img/afbullet.gif Easy installation and deinstallation
To install XAMPP you only need to download and extract XAMPP, that's all. There are no changes to the Windows registry (not true if you use the Windows installer version of XAMPP) and it's not necessary to edit any configuration files. It couldn't be easier!
To check that XAMPP is working some sample programs are included, there is a small CD collection program (written in PHP using MySQL) and a small guest book software (written in Perl) and several other demonstration utilities.
If you decide that XAMPP isn't needed any more just delete the XAMPP directory and it's completely removed from your system.
However if you use the Windows installer version of XAMPP it's recommended to use the uninstall feature. As every installer the installer will make registry entries to remember the install.
* The philosophy
The philosophy behind XAMPP is to build an easy to install distribution for developers to get into the world of Apache. To make it convenient for developers XAMPP is configured with all features turned on.
The default configuration is not good from a security point of view and it's not secure enough for a production environment - please don't use XAMPP in such environment.
Since LAMPP 0.9.5 you can make your XAMPP installation secure by calling »/opt/lampp/lampp security«.
* The license
XAMPP is a compilation of free software (comparable to a Linux distribution), it's free of charge and it's free to copy under the terms of the http://www.apachefriends.org/en/img/link.gif GNU General Public License. But it is only the compilation of XAMPP that is published under GPL. Please check every single license of the contained products to get an overview of what is, and what isn't, allowed.
In the case of commercial use please take a look at the product licenses (especially MySQL), from the XAMPP point of view commercial use is also free.
* The warranty
»This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but without any warranty; without even the implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.« (See the http://www.apachefriends.org/en/img/link.gif GNU General Public License for more details.)
Since some month (today is the 4th of july 2003) the Source Forge statistics don't work correctly any more and showing only extremely less download counts.
Because of this I started to count the downloads by myself.

Many thanks
Many thanks to the whole Apache Friends team for making such a good job at our forum/chat and for the big support in developing XAMPP.
Special thanks to http://www.apachefriends.org/en/img/link.gif Koen Hachmang for his font »Kinkimono«. We use the X of his font in our XAMPP logo.
Special thanks also to http://www.apachefriends.org/en/img/link.gif SourceForge for hosting the download files and making this project possible.

Hi everyone,

As you may remember, earlier in the year Bitnami started maintaining the XAMPP project. We have many ideas for improvement. We started with the software itself, expanding support for newer versions of PHP, more frequent releases and bringing up to date the Linux and OS X ports. We want now to improve the website, which has basically not changed since 2002! Our goal is to make the website design cleaner and easier to navigate, with responsive design to make it display correctly in different devices and browsers. Rather than come up with our own design, and given that our community is mainly web designers and developers, we thought that we should invite XAMPP users to propose their own designs We setup a 99designs contest online:

[url:2zwnbf06]http://99designs.com/web-design/contests/re-design-apache-friends-xampp-website-reach-millions-267884[/url:2zwnbf06]

If you are a XAMPP user, please make sure to mention so when including your entry (i.e. you can include your forum username) so we will take those in special consideration. The contest is for two pages on the site, in order to find out a winning design. After that, we will contact the winner to talk about redesigning the whole site.

Other things that we want to continue to improve in the future are a bigger server, documentation, forum support and additional "getting started resources". We will get to them as time permits. If you have suggestions on things that you would like improved, feel free to contact me directly at beltran (at) apachefriends (dot) org

Best regards,

Beltran

[Beltran - September, 2nd 2013]
We are happy to announce a new release of XAMPP for all platforms! This is a minor release that fixes the following issues in both XAMPP versions:

1.8.2-1 version (PHP 5.4 based)

- Fix issue with RedHat-based Linux distros (i.e CentOS) in which the start script would fail to autodetect the distribution and start the servers.
- Create "mysql" user if it does not already exist on Linux. Now MySQL runs as "mysql" user by default.
- Change Apache and ProFTP users to "daemon" on Linux. The previous "nobody" user does not exist on some Linux distributions by default (i.e. CentOS).
- Fix Mercury Mail configuration on Windows.
- Fix XDebug issue on Windows. The previous module did not work with this PHP version.

1.8.3-0 version (PHP 5.5 based)

- Updated PHP to 5.5.1 version for Windows, OS X and Linux.
CentOS).

Our goal is to keep releasing new versions periodically and maintaining the stacks up-to-date. Old versions are still archived in case you need them. Thanks to all users that posted issues in the forums. You can contribute to the Apache Friends project submitting your suggestions at http://www.apachefriends.org/f/

Enjoy!

Please give it a try and let us know what you think in this thread so we can fix any issues you may find before a final release.

BitNami & The Apache Friends Team
[Beltran - June, 11th 2013]
We have been working on Apache Friends and XAMPP for over 10 years now. We still have a lot of ideas on how to continue to improve it, but as the project grows it has become harder to find the time and resources needed to implement a lot of them. We have joined forces with BitNami to continue to improve XAMPP. BitNami provides a free library of web applications that can be installed anywhere. They are big open source supporters, have a lot of experience packaging Apache and we believe they will do a great job of improving BitNami moving forward. Please see below for some words from BitNami co-founder Daniel Lopez
Dear XAMPP users,

At BitNami, we have been great admirers of XAMPP and what it has accomplished: making it easier for programmers everywhere to quickly setup and run their own local web development environments. We had a similar goal of making web apps easier to install anywhere, whether in your laptop or in the cloud. When Kay and Kai suggested a few months ago the possibility of joining forces with them to take over maintenance of XAMPP, it was an easy decision for us. Over the next weeks and months we will be working to continue to improve XAMPP. A big chunk of our expertise is in crossplatform installation and apps. Among other things we plan to:

- Improve the existing installers
- Improve the bundled Control Panel
- Make it easy to install and develop with Drupal, Joomla!, WordPress, etc. on XAMPP

- Improve 64bit support, PostgreSQL, additional languages (i.e. Python)

- Improved Linux and OS X support
- Improve the website look and feel

As a first step, we have made BitNami for XAMPP, a one-click installer that will allow you to install Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress on top of your existing XAMPP installation.

http://www.apachefriends.org/img/link.gif http://bitnami.org/xampp

As newcomers, we are looking to the XAMPP community to help us with the transition by providing us with feedback and ideas on how to continue to improve XAMPP. Please use the XAMPP forums or feel free to email me directly at daniel@bitnami.org with any suggestions or comments.

[Oswald - March, 22nd 2013]
What's the best thing to do on a Sunday night? Correct, get a new XAMPP version out to the Internet. Of course, what else? And here it is again, an updated XAMPP.

The most important updates are: Apache 2.4.3, MySQL 5.5.27, PHP 5.4.7, and phpMyAdmin 3.5.2.2.

Yes, last Friday Oracle released a new MySQL 5.5.28. This version is not part of XAMPP. The time was to short to include this also in this release.

Again, we're not able to get also the Mac OS X version updated. Time is the problem. Is there anyone out there with good knowledge about GCC and AMP on Mac OS X?

Get the downloads and more details on the platform specific

[Oswald - October, 1st 2012]
The XAMPP 2012 survey is now over. Thank you to all who participated and helped us to get answers to our questions. Exactly 2674 individuals participated in the survey and responded with 97938 single answers in total.

It will take some time for us to go through the results, but if you're curious about the raw results, please feel free to look at the linked PDF. Thank you all again and hopefully you
’ll find this data as interesting as we do.

[Oswald - September, 24th 2012]
Last May XAMPP became 10 years old and we think this is a good time to think again about changes and improvements to XAMPP. That's what this survey is for: to find out what are your needs and what we can do to improve XAMPP in future releases.

The survey will run for about one month (until end of September), after which we will publish the results right here.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. We appreciate your feedback and we will use it to make XAMPP even more useful and enjoyable.

Our Team
There are many people behind the Apache Friends Project. Even though Kay and I started on our own, it soon became very apparent we were not able to handle all the work alone. Answering all the questions in the forum was especially difficult to do without further help.
Over the months and years that followed, some users very kindly formed into a small team that helped us. With their support Apache Friends has grown to what it is today.
Core
http://www.apachefriends.org/images/198.jpgOswald is the webmaster, forum admin, and co-founder of Apache Friends. He's also the maintainer of XAMPP for Linux, Solaris, and Mac OS X.
http://s2.googleusercontent.com/s2/favicons?alt=p&domain=plus.google.com http://s2.googleusercontent.com/s2/favicons?alt=p&domain=twitter.com http://s2.googleusercontent.com/s2/favicons?alt=p&domain=www.flickr.com http://s2.googleusercontent.com/s2/favicons?alt=p&domain=www.linkedin.com
He graduated 1999 from Technical University of Berlin with a Diplom-Informatiker degree (equivalent to a Master in Computer Science). In the 90's he created and managed Germany's biggest IRCnet server irc.fu-berlin.de, and co-managed one of the world's largest anonymous FTP server ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de. He is truly an early bird to Internet having professionally set up his first public webserver in 1993.

From 1993 until 1998 he was member of the internationally renowned "Projektgruppe Kulturraum Internet", a Berlin-based research project on net culture and network organization.
In 2006, his third book, Das XAMPP-Handbuch, was published by Addison Wesley.
From 2009 to 2011, he served as Technology Evangelist for Web Tier Products at Sun Microsystems/Oracle.
On the right you see a very early photography of him.
http://www.apachefriends.org/images/199.jpgKay is the maintainer of XAMPP for Windows. Together with Oswald he founded the Apache Friends project in 2002.
He works as freelance System Engineer and wrote several books about web technologies like Apache, MySQL and XAMPP itself.
On the right you see a more or less recent photography of him.

Projects
Apache Friends started as a project concerned solely with XAMPP. As we got our forum online the main focus of Apache Friends changed to a more general aspect: not only to develop XAMPP and support it but also give general support for Apache and related technologies.
Now we would like to support more than just our own XAMPP project. This page is the first attempt to loosen the strict alliance of XAMPP and Apache Friends and open Apache Friends to other projects than XAMPP.
This page is an early state and at the moment XAMPP is still our only project. But hopefully this will change soon.
http://www.apachefriends.org/images/193.jpgMany people know from their own experience that it's not easy to install an Apache web server and it gets harder if you want to add MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start.
At the moment there are four XAMPP versions:
  • a version for Linux systems (tested for Ubuntu, SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake and Debian),
  • a version for Windows 98, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista,
  • a beta version for Solaris SPARC (developed and tested under Solaris 8),
  • and a beta version for Mac OS X.
This Mac OS X and Solaris versions of XAMPP are still in the first steps of development. Use at you own risk!
http://www.apachefriends.org/images/194.jpgThis forum is the right place for you if you've any questions about XAMPP, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl etc.
One small word of warning: Nearly everything in our forum is German but there's an "Apache Friends in English" section as well. Most German people will understand you and will be more or less able to answer in English. You're absolutely welcome to ask questions or make suggestions! ;)
Thanks to the developers of phpBB for such a great software.
http://www.apachefriends.org/images/5328.jpgFrom time to time we're asking our users what we can do to improve XAMPP and make it more useful for everyone. In 2005 we did our first survey focusing the German users of XAMPP and in 2007 we did our second survey focusing the rest of the world.
The aim of the second survey was mainly to find out what we can improve in the upcoming XAMPP 2.0 release: Should we add Ruby or another database management system? Or should we include another programming language, for example Python? Or is there anything we can remove from XAMPP because nobody needs it anymore?

Documentation about XAMPP
There is no real manual or handbook for XAMPP. We wrote the documentation in the form of FAQs.
At the end of this small page you will find an overview over third-party documents we found online.
FAQs
The FAQ contains questions and answers about XAMPP for Windows. If there is a questions not answered in the FAQ please visit out forum.
The FAQ contains questions and answers about XAMPP for Linux. If your questions is not answered in the FAQ please take a look in the forum.
The FAQ contains questions and answers about XAMPP for Solaris. If your questions is not answered in the FAQ please take a look in the forum.
The FAQ contains questions and answers about XAMPP for MacOS X. If your questions is not answered in the FAQ please take a look in the forum.
Third-party documentation
Excellent »developerWorks« article about XAMPP for Linux from Nils-Erik Frantzell.
A document on how to install ZendPlatform on a XAMPP for Windows installation by Marcel Depre.
by Dalibor Dvorski
The article explains the installation and configuration of XAMPP and then provides a step-by-step tutorial on creating a simple address book program that retrieves values from a database.

Extras
Here you will find some extra stuff which somehow belongs to Apache Friends and XAMPP.
Can't find what you're looking for? Search our site using Google.
Because the German version of our guest book was so popular we started this English version.
I decided to make a very simple form of guest book. With only one text area and no more crap like fields for your e-mail-address, name or home page url. Just plain as a real world guest book.
Since some month (today is the 4th of july 2003) the Source Forge statistics don't work correctly any more and showing only extremely less download counts.
Because of this I started to count the downloads by myself.
Small but beautiful statistics about home countries of the vistiors of our website.
